CATS TO TEST NEW TURF IN CLASH WITH LAKE VILLAGE FRIDAY NIGHT

If all goes according to plans, the new artificial turf at Wildcat Field will be put to the test Friday night as will the ‘Cat defense when Rison hosts the Lake Village Beavers in a non-conference tussle. Kickoff time is scheduled for 7 o’clock. This game next year will be a conference contest when the ‘Cats move up to Class 3A. Rison will enter Friday’s game with a 2-0 record, while the Beavers, members of the 6-3A Conference, are 1-1 with a win over Hermitage and a loss last week to Star City. In assessing this week’s foe, the first thing that jumps out at Wildcat head coach Clay Totty and his staff is Lake Village quarterback Aarion Kilgore. “He is a good one,” Totty said, commenting about Kilgore, who last year passed for close to 2,000 yards and ran for almost 1,000 yards. In Rison’s 58-22 win at Lake Village a year ago, Kilgore had touchdown passes of 59 and 31 yards, and ran 66 yards for another TD. In all against the ‘Cats a year ago, Kilgore passed for 203 yards. “They (Lake Village) are about 77 percent pass, so it’s going to be good work for us defensively,” Totty remarked. “We haven’t seen a lot of pass yet this year. But if he (Kilgore) gets flushed out of the backfield he can really hurt you. He’s athletic. We want him to pass instead of run.” The Beavers, under new head coach Chris Williams, are coming off a 4-7 campaign in 2016 that included a trip to the playoffs where they were eliminated in the opening round by eventual state champion Prescott. For this season the Beavers returned a strong nucleus of their offense, including Kilgore and several other skill position weapons.
